The lane will make it easier for traffic to leave the N33, so that queues are less likely to build up on the N33. On the south side of the roundabout, the bus lane to the Gieten public transport hub is also being extended, so that buses can leave the N34 sooner.
On the night of Thursday 29 to Friday 30 October, from 10pm to 6am, the road from the N33 to the N34 at the roundabout will be closed, as will the southbound N34 between the roundabout and the Gieten-Zuid junction at the Oelenboom. The contractor will use that night to set up the work site, with temporary lighting and traffic measures, so that most of the new lane can then be built without disrupting traffic.
From Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, the same stretch of the N34 will be closed in both directions every evening and night from 7pm to 6am. That week the new lane and the bus lane will be surfaced with asphalt and new road markings will be applied.
During the closures, through traffic will be diverted via other provincial roads and national roads. Buses will mostly keep to their usual routes, although the timetable may change; passengers can find the latest information from the bus operator Qbuzz.
From Monday 23 November the work will be finished off with road markings, crash barriers and signs, among other things, for which no more roads need to be closed. According to the schedule, everything will be finished on Friday 27 November.
When the province and Rijkswaterstaat, the national roads authority, announced the changes in October 2025, the fly-over at the roundabout was expected in 2030. Until it is built, the new layout will stay in place.
