Schoonloo residents can nail their wishes to the Spiekeriek

From Friday 14 to Friday 21 November the Spiekeriek, the ‘nail oak’, stands by the informatie-uil, an information point on Hoofdstraat in Schoonloo. Anyone who wants to tell the Aa en Hunze council something can nail a message to the tree there.

On Wednesday 10 December the council will discuss all the messages with residents at a residents’ evening at café-restaurant Hegeman, Hoofdstraat 16. Doors open at 7.30pm and the discussion begins at 8pm.

The Spiekeriek travels from village to village in Aa en Hunze and has stood in Schipborg and Gieterveen, among other places. According to the municipality, the idea goes back to an old custom of involving residents in decisions. In June 2024 the council and the Spiekeriek working group decided that the tree will stay on the move at least until the 2026 municipal elections.
