Dorpsbelangen Rolde, the village's residents' association, has started a petition against rat-running traffic to and from Assen through the village. Dorpsbelangen says this traffic is bad for road safety and quality of life in Rolde.

According to Dorpsbelangen, 60 per cent of the traffic that ought to take the N33 to Assen chooses the road through Rolde instead.

The municipality of Aa en Hunze has already taken measures. At dangerous crossings, such as on Asserstraat, there are warning lights and signs. Measures to slow traffic down, such as chicanes, are also being discussed.

Dorpsbelangen does not think that is enough. It wants not just Asserstraat to be looked at, but also the other through roads in the village, such as the stretch through the village centre up to the N33 slip roads just outside Rolde. Above all, Dorpsbelangen wants measures on those roads that slow traffic down. Chairman Ben Ernens is thinking of speed bumps or other obstacles, so that drivers have to slow down. "Only then will cars really be discouraged from taking the road through Rolde," says Ernens.

According to Dorpsbelangen, one of the main causes is that the ring road around Assen was never finished on the Rolde side. As a result, the traffic goes through the village. Dorpsbelangen believes that the neighbouring municipality of Assen is saddling Rolde with a problem this way, and is also asking the province of Drenthe to deal with it.

In the petition, Dorpsbelangen calls on the municipality and the other parties involved to take action. You can sign it at petities.nl.
