Regulators look at the Drentsche Aa as a source of drinking water

The NVWA and the ILT, the Dutch inspectorates for food and product safety and for the living environment and transport, visited the Drentsche Aa National Park on the afternoon of Friday 17 October. They came to see how the region keeps the stream’s water clean, because it is used to make drinking water.

The Unie van Waterschappen, which represents the Dutch water boards, also took part, as did Rijkswaterstaat, the national roads and waterways agency, and Omgevingsdienst NL, the association of regional environmental services. The group started at the Huis van de Drentsche Aa in Deurze, then drove through the area and finished at the De Punt pumping station in Glimmen, where water is taken in from the Drentsche Aa. Once treated, it comes out of the taps of hundreds of thousands of people.

The province of Drenthe, the Hunze en Aa’s water board, Omgevingsdienst Drenthe and the water company Waterbedrijf Groningen had prepared the visit together. It was mainly about how the region works together within the Uitvoeringsprogramma Oppervlaktewaterwinning Drentsche Aa, the programme for taking drinking water from the stream, because according to the organisers the stream is vulnerable and they can only protect it together.
