The province of Drenthe will start work on the public transport hub in Gieten on Monday and on the traffic circle near the N33 and N34 at the end of October. Traffic between Assen, Gieten and Emmen will face closures on several evenings and nights.

In Gieten, two provincial projects that are also important for traffic from the Rolde area will begin in the coming weeks. The public transport hub will get a new layout from Monday 19 October. Work on the junction of the N33 and N34 will start on Thursday 29 October.

At the Gieten traffic circle, an extra lane will be added for traffic coming from the N33 from the direction of Assen and driving onto the N34 towards Emmen. According to the province, this should make it easier for traffic to merge and reduce the chance of queues on the N33.

The bus lane on the south side towards the public transport hub will also be extended. This will allow buses to merge earlier from the N34 to the public transport hub.

Closures on the N33 and N34

On the night from Thursday 29 to Friday 30 October, from 22.00 to 06.00, the connection from the N33 to the N34 towards the Gieten traffic circle will be closed. The N34 between the Gieten traffic circle and the Gieten-Zuid, Oelenboom, junction will also be closed in the southbound direction.

From Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, the N34 between the Gieten traffic circle and the Gieten-Zuid junction will be closed in both directions between 19.00 and 06.00. During that period, the new carriageway will receive asphalt, asphalt will be laid on the bus lane and new markings will be added.

Through traffic will be diverted via other provincial and national roads during the closures. Public transport can largely continue to follow the normal route, but an adjusted timetable is possible.

From Monday 23 November, the province will complete the final work. This will include markings, guard rails and signs. No closure is needed for this. According to the schedule, work on the traffic junction should be finished on Friday 27 November.

More greenery and lighting at the public transport hub

The public transport hub in Gieten will be modified between Monday 19 October and Friday 18 December. A large part of the concrete pillars will be removed. There will be more greenery, extra seating near new planters and lighting.

Deputy Bart van Dekken says that travellers asked for more greenery, better lighting and greater social safety in a survey in February 2025. According to him, the changes are a first step in improving the hub.

The public transport hub will remain accessible to travellers and buses during the work. Noise nuisance may occur when the pillars are removed. That work is scheduled for Sunday 22 and Sunday 29 November.
